…but we're getting closer, with two companies already offering personal genetic testing, for about $1000, that uses the new DNA chips to test over half a million SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms). The companies are 23andMe and DeCODE, with a third, Navigenics, planning to start offering services sometime next year. Add in work being done by the Personal Genome Project, and we find ourselves in rather exciting times.
Of course, genes are only the starting point. When you consider recent discoveries in epigenetics, we still have much to learn about how our genetic information translates into actual biologic effects.
