A good book

June 25, 2007

I recently read the excellent book “Letter to a Christian Nation” by Sam Harris. In less than a hundred pages, Harris summarizes many of the arguments against theistic religion in general, and Christianity in particular. He dismisses the coexistance of science and religion (the idea of “non-overlapping magesteria”), demonstrating the underlying conflict between rational reliance on evidence and irrational faith. He also addresses clearly not only the threat of radical religion, particularly fundamentalist Muslims, but how the more moderate, through their 'tolerance' and continued placing of religious beliefs as somehow not open to public questioning or debate (as all other beliefs are), only contribute to the problem. While I may not agree with some of the political positions hinted at within the text, I was greatly impressed by this book: it should be required reading (for everyone).
Next, I shall be reading Sam Harris' previous and longer book, “The End of Faith.”
