A Grammy in Math?

According to this Slashdot post, a restoration of a highly distorted bootleg recording of a Woody Guthrie live performance in 1949, recorded on a wire via pre-magnetic tape technology, has been nominated for a Grammy. Key in restoring the recording were algorithms developed by University of New Hampshire mathematician Kevin Short; along with processes created by sound engineer Jamie Howarth.
The original Science News article can be found here. It contains samples of the recording before and after the restoration.
