Does Language Underly Prejudice?

Mixing Memory has a post concerning a paper published last year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences which argues that the root of in-group preferences and social group conflicts may lie in linguistic preferences. The arguement is based in infant research which shows 5-6 month old children prefer individuals who speak their native language (that is to say, the language of the home), over other languages or non-languages.
