“Uncle Ted” Stevens

The ongoing VECO scandal here in Alaska has now hit the national news with the indictment of Senator Ted Stevens on seven-counts of making false statements. The editors of National Review have called for his resignation. And, in accordance with Senate rules, he has already stepped down (for the duration of the case) from his positions as Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.
At this point, whether Stevens is convicted or not, this means that current Anchorage mayor, and Democratic Party candidate for Stevens’ seat Mark Begich will almost certainly win this election, no matter who his opponent is. As I am not exactly a fan of Mayor Begich, I am not happy about this. Futher, it’s bad for the Republican Party on the national level.

Lastly, I would point out that an indictment is not a conviction, that the presumption of innocence holds even for politicians, and that Rep. William Jefferson (D) still holds his seat in the House of Representatives despite his indictment last year on 16 counts of money laundering, bribery and racketeering.
