Armand Leroi has a Free Republic article about the chuas, or “rat people,” of Pakistan, people born with microcephaly. He talks about the cultural aspects, the research into genetic factors (and the degree to which the high rate of first-cousin marriage among Pakistanis may contribute to the prevalence of recessive-gene disorders), and how the study of microcephaly and its genetics have helped us learn about the development of the human brain. It is a well-rounded and interesting article, well worth the read.
