‘Air-purifying’ concrete

The Dutch town of Hengelo is going to be paving a road with an experimental “air-purifying concrete” in a trial of the substance’s effectiveness, physorg.com reports. The material, developed at the University of Twente, contains a titanium dioxide-based additive which, under laboratory conditions, uses sunlight to catalyse reactions turning nitrogen oxide pollutants (involved in both smog and acid rain) in the air into harmless, water-soluble nitrates.
