Okay, so John McCain’s campaign creates an ad which compares his opponent to vacuous celebrities Britney Spears and Paris Hilton; playing on Barack Obama’s inexperience, vacuous “change” rhetoric, and media-driven campaign.
Then, we get New York Times columnist Bob Herbert misidentifying the “phallic” landmark appearing in the video (the Victory Column in Berlin, where Obama spoke recently) when decrying the ad as “racist”, arguing that the juxtaposition of Obama, the monument, and the aforementioned Mses. Spears and Hilton wass actually intended to subliminally play on white male “the black man’s out to steal our womenfolk” fears (since as any good liberal knows, all white people, and only white people, are racist).
Now, we have rich wastrel Ms. Hilton responding with a fake campaign ad on humor site Funny or Die, in which she declares herself “like, totally ready to lead,” and offers an inept alternative US energy plan combining elements from both candidates energy strategies (insert your own Paris Hilton “drilling” joke here).
Looking at this, the process by which our public ultimately decides who will lead this country for the next four years, I can only think of a quote from Napoleon Bonaparte: “We must laugh at man to avoid crying for him.”
