AIDS and bone-marrow transplant

ERV reports on the AIDS patient ‘Functionally cured’ of HIV-1 at a German hospital by a bone marrow transplant from a CCR5-Δ32 donor.
As ERV notes:

Of course,”caveats are legion” (lol)– 30% of patients die from the chemo/transplant. This treatment is even more expensive and intensive than anti-retrovirals– It would be impossible to implement in the areas that need an AIDS cure the worst (Africa).

Anyway, it’s still cool, and at least a start for a new line of research, and offers a ray of hope not present before.
