From page two of an article by Mark Hemingway on Hollywood’s attempts at influencing elections, comes this quote (concerning the 2000 film “The Contender“): “As the tough-guy Democratic president, Jeff Bridges chews so much scenery that he’s more termite than overactor.”

Iron Man

I went and saw “Iron Man” today. It was rather good, in my opinion.
Cut for some mild spoilers

Movie Trailers

March 1, 2008

I’ve seen a few new trailers for upcoming movies recently. Here are my thoughts on them

The Love Guru:

It looks like this movie recycles a lot of the same jokes we’ve seen in many othe Mike Myers movies; particularly with Verne Troyer in the cast. Add in characters named “Guru Tugginmypudha” and “Guru Satchabigknoba.” This film, in my opinion, is more likely to be less funny than just stupid. It also contains the kiss of death.

Get Smart:

Steve Carell seems like an excellent fit for the roll of Maxwell Smart. Add a cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, Alan Arkin, Terry Crews, Bill Murray, and Masi Oka, and it looks to be quite good; especially for a movie remake of an old TV series (think of examples like this, this, or this).

Dark Matter:

As always, one should treat the “Based on True Events” claim with caution. It looks like this one departs far from the story that inspired it (that of Gang Lu). In particular, it seems to depart in the usual Hollywood Leftist manner. See here for details.

Iron Man:

There have been a couple of trailers and the Super Bowl spot already, so I already have expectations of an exciting, special-effects filled comic-book adaptation. One can hope that with the casting choice of Robert Downey Jr. that the film will give at least some attention to Tony Stark’s alcoholism, which has been an important part of his development as a character (who is particularly fleshed-out and human for a superhero).

Step Brothers:

Why do people think Will Ferrell is funny? One would think that between “Anchorman,” “Talladega Nights,” and “Semi-Pro,” people would have been disabused of this notion, but yet he still keeps getting movies made. And considering this one is by the same team that made those first two I listed, one can only expect more of the same, which is not good at all.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I have to ask: who doesn’t feel excited when they hear that familiar theme start fifty seconds in? I can only say “it’s about time!”

The Happening:

One one hand, it’s by M. Night Shyamalan, who gave us good movies like “The Sixth Sense,” “Unbreakable,” and “Lady in the Water.” On the other hand, it’s by M. Night Shyamalan, who gave us movies like “Signs,” and “The Village.” This apparent hybrid of “The Signal” and “Suicide Club” looks to be more like the latter (that is to say, bad).
